Eureka Firefighters Win Charity Basketball Tournament

By Daniel Solomon, 04/14/08, The Eureka Reporter

Eureka Fire Department's Chris Mitchell shoots over Arcata's Rodney Dickerson during the Arcata Volunteer Fire Department's third annual fundraising event Sunday afternoon at Arcata High School.

The Arcata Volunteer Fire Department’s Archie Bernardi Firefighter Basketball Tournament is held each year to raise money for charitable causes, and this year all proceeds from the tournament went to the Archie Bernardi Education and Training Scholarship Fund.  According to Fire Captain Kurt Dernedde of Cal Fire, the scholarship fund assists young firefighters through their training and was originally created by Bernardi.  Four teams consisting of firefighters and friends of firefighters from Eureka and Arcata fire departments, Humboldt Fire District and Cal Fire battled it out on the basketball court in a friendly game for charity.  The odds were stacked in favor of the Eureka Fire Department, which was helped by players from the Eureka Police Department and a couple of players from Humboldt State University’s basketball team.  After the dust settled, the Eureka Fire Department was victorious, thereby earning bragging rights for the year.
