Eureka Fire welcomes new recruits, volunteers

The Eureka Fire Department welcomed new recruits and volunteers and recognized department promotions at a pinning ceremony on Wednesday.

Interim Fire Chief Bill Gillespie led the ceremony at the EFD headquarters on C Street with Mayor Frank Jager offering the oath. The four new recruits had gone through six weeks of training in Eureka and were added to the firefighter ranks.

New recruits Nicholas Acord from Redding, Justin Conner from Paradise, Brett Christensen from Humboldt County and David Terry of Eureka were pinned and started their one-year probationary period Wednesday. Fire Capt. Chris Jelinek said the recruits went through local training to learn the “Eureka way” of handling emergencies and told the recruits to “treat your career as a lifelong opportunity to learn.”

”They've shown tremendous drive and commitment,” Jelinek said at the ceremony.

Four new volunteer firefighters were also sworn in at the ceremony -- Manuel Fonseca, Kyle Hanson, Jeremiah Kasinger and Casey Lund -- along with arson investigators Neil Butler and Tony Freeman.

Gillespie said they also had a number of promotions to recognize going back to 2009. Promotions are typically acknowledged at pinning ceremonies, but Gillespie said the EFD had not held such a ceremony in more than two years. Fire Capts. II Chris Emmons and Sean Robertson, Capt. James Flynn, and engineers Ben Miller and Nathan Baxley reiterated the oath of office in honor of their new positions.
