On Friday, February 24, 2012 Firefighter Jason Campillo was honored by the Humboldt Chapter of the American Red Cross at their annual Humboldt Heroes event. A number of local heroes were honored at the luncheon for life saving actions that they performed during 2011.
FF Campillo was honored for saving a life in the line of duty during a water rescue near the Samoa Bridge June 15th, 2011. FF Campillo swam to the aid of a man who had jumped from the bridge into Humboldt Bay, and was about to drown. Many of the firefighters pictured with FF Campillo assisted and supported the rescue efforts that day. (Also pictured is Jason's wife Janna)
Through support of the Eureka City Council, and additional support of Humboldt Fire District #1, the Humboldt Bay Fire Water Rescue Team was developed. The goal of the team is to properly train and equip existing Humboldt Bay Fire personnel for near shore rescues within the bay and adjacent waterways.
