Eureka Firefighter's participate in San Francisco Centennial Exposition

Eureka Firefighters participated in San Francisco’s 1906 Great Earthquake & Fire Expo at Pier 48 on April 15, 16, and 17. Seven current firefighters and one retired chief coordinated the effort to make the trip and showcase two pieces of Eureka Fire Department’s antique fire apparatus.

Firefighters displayed and operated their 1904 American Metropolitan First Class Steam Fire Engine to the delight of not only visitors but other attendees. The Eureka “Steamer” was one of only three operational “Steamers” that performed at the Centennial Exposition.

Firefighters also displayed and operated the first piece of fire apparatus owned by the City of Eureka. The fully restored 1849 Hunneman Handpumper was in full glory on Sunday when it pumped, with the assistance of local school children, to produce a firestream as had been done 150 years earlier.
